The word hood covers several different products. A bare fan filter unit, a horizontal clean bench, and a vertical cabinet can each move filtered air across a work area. They do not give the operator the same protection as a certified biological safety cabinet.
For mushroom culture work, begin with the work surface. Count the plates or bags you handle in one session. Measure the bench depth and the clearance behind or above the unit. A 2×4 ft FFU may fit a single-person bench; a 3×4 ft face gives more room when the table can support it.
Compare the unit, not the headline
Ask for these figures before choosing a model:

The equipment catalog includes 2×4 and 3×4 FFUs, wall mounted versions, and a vertical cabinet. The 2×4 listing specifies 120 V power, a replaceable HEPA filter rated 99.99% at 0.3 microns, and variable speed control. Freight is quoted separately on the large units.
Do not apply an airflow figure from one FFU to another because both have the same outer dimensions. Match the model number, filter, and stated test condition before comparing CFM or face velocity.
Horizontal or vertical flow?
Horizontal flow moves filtered air from the back of the bench toward you. Vertical flow sends air down through the work zone. Your choice depends on the items you handle, the enclosure, and where the air can leave the bench. Keep critical open materials in the clean air path and keep your hands from blocking that path.
Neither layout by itself makes a clean bench a biological safety cabinet. CDC’s biosafety guidance says horizontal and vertical clean benches protect the work, not the operator, and should not handle hazardous material. Check the application before treating an FFU as lab safety equipment.
For a first purchase, compare a 2×4 FFU with a 3×4 FFU and then look at the delivered cost. A cabinet, table, and replacement filters can change the budget more than the unit’s sticker price.
